Dartmouth stuns RPI, will face Union in ECAC Hockey tournament quarterfinals

It will be a rematch of last year's ECAC Hockey tournament best-of-three quarterfinals next weekend at Messa Rink.

Cleary Cup-champion and top-seeded Union will face No. 10 Dartmouth. The matchup was set up after the Big Green scored three goals to erase a two-goal deficit and stun No. 7 RPI, 5-4, Sunday night at Houston Field House to win the first-round series, 2-1.

Union swept Dartmouth in last year's quarterfinals by scores of 4-1 and 5-2. The Dutchmen were the No. 4 seed, and the Big Green were No. 5.

The Dutchmen won the season series. They romped to a 7-2 win Nov. 1 in Hanover, N.H. In the Dec. 11 rematch at Messa, Union scored twice in the third period to rally for a 3-2 victory.

Against RPI, Dartmouth (10-18-6) entered the third period down, 4-2. Eric Neiley made it 4-3 2:10 into the third. Brandon McNally tied it just over 6 1/2 minutes later.

Brad Schierhorn scored the game-winner with 2:14 to go.

Goalie Charles Grant made 35 saves.

Ryan Haggerty, Mike Zalewski, Chris Bradley and Mark McGowan scored for RPI, which finishes the season 15-16-6.

Tim O'Brien and Rick Pinston had the other Dartmouth goals.

In Sunday's other Game 3, No. 5 Clarkson advanced with a 3-2 win over No. 12 Princeton.

So, quarterfinal matchups are Dartmouth at Union, No. 8 St. Lawrence at No. 2 Colgate, No. 6 Yale at No. 3 Quinnipiac in a rematch of last year's NCAA championship game and Clarkson at No. 4 Cornell.

The last time a team beat RPI in the first round at Houston Field House and returned to the Capital Region for the quarterfinals was Colgate on 2011. The 12th-seeded Raiders upset the Engineers in three games, and eliminated the top-seeded Dutchmen in three games in the quarterfinals.
