Ex-Union goalie Mayotte named Providence assistant coach

By Ken Schott
Thursday, July 24, 2014

Former Union goalie Kris Mayotte was named assistant coach at Providence College on Wednesday.

Mayotte spent the last two years as an assistant coach at St. Lawrence. He was a volunteer assistant coach at Cornell during the 2011-12 season.

Mayotte is reunited with Friars coach Nate Leaman. Mayotte played for Leaman from 2003-06.

Mayotte replaces Ben Barr, who became an assistant coach at Western Michigan. Mayotte and Barr are forever linked in the Union-RPI hockey rivalry. It was Barr who scored two short-handed goals against Mayotte in the third period of Game 2 in the 2003 ECAC Hockey tournament first round, turning a 2-1 Union lead into a 3-2 RPI win and a sweep of the best-of-three series.

Barr later served as an assistant coach with Leaman at Union.
