Blues sign ex-Union standout Welsh

Former Union hockey standout Jeremy Welsh has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the St. Louis Blues, the NHL team announced Tuesday.

Welsh, who led the Dutchmen to the team's first Frozen Four appearance in 2012, split last season between the Vancouver Canucks and the AHL's Utica Comets. The 6-foot-3, 191-pound forward posted had a goal in 19 games with the Canucks, and had seven goals and eight assists in 49 games with the Comets.

After Union lost to Ferris State in the Frozen Four semifinals, Welsh gave up his senior season to sign with the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes traded Welsh to the Canucks before the start of last season.
