Union suspends coach Rick Bennett two games

Union coach Rick Bennett has been suspended for two games by athletic director Jim McLaughlin on Sunday for his actions following Saturday night's 2-1 loss to RPI in the Mayor's Cup game at the Times Union Center.

While both teams were engaging in confrontations on the ice after the final buzzer had sounded, Bennett went after RPI coach Seth Appert. Bennett was restrained by one of the game officials.

"We regret the incidents that took place upon the conclusion of last night’s men’s ice hockey game vs. RPI and wish to apologize for our actions," McLaughlin said in a statement. "At this time, we will be suspending head men’s ice hockey coach Rick Bennett for two games, effective immediately."

Bennett, as well as Appert, apologized after the game.

"On behalf of Union College and the men’s hockey team, I apologize for my actions and behavior after last night’s game against RPI," Bennett said in a statement. "The administration, supporters, and loyal fans of both programs deserve and demand better from me. I’m truly sorry for the events that took place after the game."

Assistant coach Joe Dumais will be the acting head coach for Union's games this weekend at St. Lawrence and Clarkson. Bennett won't travel with the team.

There could be further penalties against Bennett from ECAC Hockey.

The Dutchmen won't have defenseman Mat Bodie and center Eli Lichtenwald for Friday's game against St. Lawrence. Both players received game disqualifications, which carry an automatic suspension.
