NFL announces 2014 schedule

By Ken Schott
Wednesday, April 23, 2014

The NFL season will kick off Thursday, Sept. 4, when the Super Bowl-champion Seattle Seahawks host the Green Bay Packers. NBC will televise the game.

The New York Giants will open the ESPN "Monday Night Football" schedule Sept. 8 when they face the Detroit Lions.

CBS begins its slate of Thursday night games Sept. 11 when Pittsburgh visits Baltimore. The eight-game schedule, which includes a Week 16 Saturday night game, will be simulcast on NFL Network.

NFL Network will have eight solo games, seven Thursdays and one Saturday.

In an oddity, the three Thanksgiving Day games will feature all NFC teams. CBS, which is home of the AFC, will return to its NFC roots when it televises Chicago at Detroit at 12:30 p.m. FOX, which took over the NFC packake from CBS in 1994, will have Philadelphia at Dallas at 4:30 p.m. The prime-time game on NBC is Seattle at San Francisco at 8:30 p.m.

One major change is that NBC and the NFL can flex games as early as Week 5. However, the NFL can't change games every week. It can flex up to two games between Week 5 and Week 10. Normal flexing resumes in Week 11.

As for the prime-time schedules, here they are:
