Gostisbehere named Union hockey MVP

Union junior defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere was named the team Most Valuable Player at the Dutchmen's season-ending banquet Thursday at The Edison Club in Rexford.

Gostisbehere, who will make his pro debut Friday with the Adirondack Phantoms, led the team in plus/minus rating (+33) while ranking third in blocked shots (52), fourth in assists (25) and fifth in scoring (34 points). Gostisbehere, the Philadelphia Flyers' third-round pick in the 2012 NHL draft, earned All-America honors for the second time in his career and was named one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award. He shared the ECAC Player of the Year and the Best Defensive Defenseman awards.

Other winners were Mat Bodie (Coaches' Award), Kevin Sullivan (Most Improved), Mike Vecchione (Rookie of the Year), Charlie Vasaturo (Unsung Hero), Cole Ikkala (Morrison Scholarship), Theo DiPauli (Dukehart Academic Award) and Sebastien Gingras (Dukehart Academic Award).
