Calderone hired by WTMM (updates with quotes)
Joe Calderone has been hired by ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team (WTMM-FM) to co-host the afternoon drive sportstalk show, the station announced Thursday.
Calderone will team with Pierce Brix to host "Joe and Brix" from 3-7 p.m. starting Monday. They will replace "Game On with Bruce Jacobs." Jacobs left the station Sept. 6 after his contract wasn't renewed.
Calderone, the former sports director at YNN, had three tryouts with WTMM. He is native of Broadalbin.
"For eight or nine years, I was known for doing TV," Calderone said. "I loved doing TV, but if anyone knows me, I loved doing radio. The only thing that ever got me out way back in the day was the pay [stunk]."
WTMM brand manager Armen Williams said Calderone's local connection was a major factor in his hiring.
"Joe is well known in this area, and knows so many people," said Williams, who is on from 1-3 p.m. weekdays. "We wanted to have someone that had those local ties. When I met Joe for the first time for lunch, the entire interview we talked about the local sports scene and what it means to him, and what this area means to him.
"We're still going to talk about the main regional headlines between the Yankees, Giants, Jets, Mets and Rangers. But we also feel that when there are local headlines, Joe Calderone is our guy to fully dissect it and get that heartbeat of the Capital Region."
Brix, who was co-host of the station's Sunday show "Cover 2," had been temporarily hosting the 3-7 show. He is host of the station's "Giants Weekly" show at 11 a.m. on Saturdays.
"Pierce has worked really hard the last couple of years here," Williams said. "He has earned his position. He has proven to us that he is the right guy to co-lead us in the afternoons."
