Union goalie Stevens could be ready to play Friday; Pontarelli, Gonye questionable
Union could get junior goalie Colin Stevens back for Friday's ECAC Hockey opener at Dartmouth, but freshmen forwards Michael Pontarelli and Alex Gonye are questionable.
Stevens hasn't played since suffering an upper-body injury in the season-opening game against Bowling Green Oct. 11 when he was steamrolled by Falcons forward Bryce Williamson just over six minutes into the first period.
"I've skated a few times, been back on the ice and I felt really good," said the Niskayuna native Stevens, who served as the backup goalie to freshman Alex Sakellaropoulos in last Friday's 2-2 tie at UConn, the first game he suited up for since the injury.
Union coach Rick Bennett said whether or not Stevens starts will be made Friday.
As for Pontarelli, the team's top goal scorer with four, and Gonye, Bennett said the two were nicked up in practice.
"Practice has been a little tougher," Bennett said. "Sometimes, the new guys coming in aren't prepared for that. ... If we want to be successful, it's going to take bumps and bruises."
