Union, Bowling Green skate to 3-3 tie (updates with Stevens' condition)
Union and Bowling Green skated to a 3-3 tie in the NCAA hockey opener for both teams Friday at Messa Rink.
Of bigger concern is the injury to junior goalie and Niskayuna native Colin Stevens, who was run over by Bryce Williamson 6:21 into the game. After the game, Union coach Rick Bennett said Stevens suffered an upper-body injury, and that they would know more about his status for Saturday's rematch against the Falcons.
Freshman Alex Sakellaropoulos replaced Stevens, and finished with 21 saves.
Eli Lichtenwald and Matt Hatch scored first-period goals for the 16th-ranked Dutchmen. BG tied it in the second on goals by Dan DeSalvo and Pierre-Luc Mercier.
Daniel Carr regained the lead for the Dutchmen on a power-play goal with 6:56 left in the second. But Bryce Williamson's pass from behind the Union net hit a Dutchmen defenseman and sneaked past Sakellaropoulos five minutes later for a power-play goal.
In overtime, Carr was robbed twice on great saves by goalie Tommy Burke
