ECAC Hockey team preview: Colgate (with video)

Today I begin previewing the Union's and RPI's ECAC Hockey opponents for the 2013-14 season. 10 other teams

Coach: Don Vaughan (20th season, 328-331-75).

2012-13 record: 14-18-4 (6-13-3 ECACH).

Key returning players: Junior forward Joe Wilson (8-15-23), sophomore forwards Tylor Spink (13-18-31), Tyson Spink (7-20-27), Kyle Baun (14-10-24) and Darcy Murphy (10-5-15), junior defenseman Spiro Goulakos (7-11-18), senior goalie Eric Mihalik (6-7-1, 2.83 GAA) and sophomore goalie Spencer Finney (8-11-3, 2.68 GAA).

New players: Forwards Emilio Audi, Andrew Black, Julian Fialkow, Derek Freeman, Tim Harrison and Brooks Herrington; defensemen Brett Corkey, Jake Kulevich and Anthony Sanniti; goalie Charlie Finn.

Outlook: The Raiders faded down the stretch, going 1-9-2, including two losses to St. Lawrence in the first round of the ECACH tournament. Colgate was a young team last season, but there is plenty of offensive power with the Spink brothers, Wilson and Baun. Finney appeared to emerge as Colgate’s No. 1 goalie, but he struggled in the final month of the season. And Goulakos, who has overcome Hodgkin’s lymphoma, is an inspiration to the team. Colgate could be this season’s dark horse squad.

Predicted finish: Coaches: ninth. Media: ninth. Me: eighth.
