Route 7 Rivalry: RPI, Union tied after first

RPI and Union traded special-teams goals and are tied, 1-1, after the first period play in their ECAC Hockey Route 7 Rivalry game Friday at Messa Rink.

Brock Higgs scored a short-handed goal when a clearing attempt by goalie Colin Stevens hit the senior center and went into the net 4:56 into the game. The puck had come out of the Union zone on a blocked shot, and Stevens was hesitant to come out and play the puck.

Daniel Ciampini tied it on a power-play goal with 6:13 left in the period. He was in the mid-slot when he tipped a Shayne Gostisbehere shot from the high slot past goalie Scott Diebold.

Diebold made a great blocker save on an Eli Lichtenwald backhander late in the period.

Union outshot RPI, 13-5.
