Union rolls, clinches home ice for ECAC Hockey tournament
Union got off to a quick start against St. Lawrence, a the Dutchmen never looked back as they beat the Saints, 5-1, in an ECAC Hockey game Friday at Messa Rink.
The victory clinched home ice for at least the first round of the ECACH tournament. The Dutchmen are in a three-way tie for the final first-round bye spot with Dartmouth and St. Lawrence. If the teams remained tied after Saturday's season finale, Union would lose the head-to-head-to-head tiebreakers. Union needs to beat Clarkson while the Saints and Big Green tie or lose to RPI and Quinnipiac, respectively, to get the bye.
Union trails third-place Yale by a point.
The Dutchmen lost defenseman Charlie Vasaturo and goalie Troy Grosneick to injuries. Vasaturo left the game in the first period, and Grosenick departed after giving up the Saints' only goal midway through the third period.
Dutchmen coach Rick Bennett wouldn't comment on the nature of the injuries.
Vasaturo and Matt Hatch scored in the first 4:05 of the game to give the Dutchmen a 2-0 lead. Kyle Bodie made it 3-0 in the second. Mat Bodie and Wayne Simpson scored in the third.
Grosenick made 17 saves. Colin Stevens stopped two shots in relief.
