Union downs Harvard, 4-1 (updates)

Max Novak and Wayne Simpson scored power-play goals, and Matt Wilkins and Daniel Carr added tallies Tuesday as 19th-ranked Union skated to a 4-1 ECAC Hockey victory over Harvard at Messa Rink.

Novak was in the slot when Mat Bodie sent the puck to him from the blue line. Novak sent a low wrist shot past goalie Rafael Girard with 2:23 left in the period to break the scoreless deadlock.

Simpson scored on a two-man advantage at 8:12 of the third. Standing to the right of Girard, Simpson took a Bodie pass from the high slot, whirled around and beat the goalie over the stick side.

After Jimmy Vesey scored for Harvard at 10:54, Wilkins restored Union's two-goal lead when his shot from the high slot beat a screened Girard with 6:25 to go.

Carr added an empty-net goal with 19 seconds left.

Bodie had three assists.

Union faces Capital Region rival RPI in the inaugural Mayor's Cup game at 7:30 p.m. at the Times Union Center.
