Update: McCabe, Gaudreau lead U.S. into WJC gold medal game

Jake McCabe and Johnny Gaudreau scored two goals apiece Thursday, powering Team USA to a 5-1 victory over Canada in the semifinals of World Junior Hockey Championships in Ufa, Russia.

Team USA advances to Saturday's gold-medal game against defending WJC champion Sweden, a 3-2 winner over Russia. The final will be played at 8 a.m. and will be on NHL Network.

Union sophomore defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere returned to the Team USA lineup after serving a one-game suspension for his major slashing penalty in Monday's preliminary-round game against Slovakia. Gostisbehere, who had been getting a regular shift throughout the WJC, saw very limited time against Canada. It appeared he only had four shifts.

McCabe, who plays defense for Wisconsin, scored twice in the first period. Gaudreau, a Boston College forward, scored his first goal 2:58 into the second period. Harvard freshman forward Jim Vesey made it 4-0 with 7:16 left in the second and chased starting goalie Malcolm Subban from the game.

Gaudreau sealed the deal with a goal late in the third period.

U.S. goalie John Gibson made 33 saves.

The U.S. won the gold medal in 2004 and 2010. Former RPI forward Jerry D'Amigo was a part of the 2010 team.
