Team USA rolls past Czech Republic, 7-0

While you were sleeping this morning, Team USA advanced to the semifinals of the World Junior Hockey Championships.

Boston College forward John Gaudreau had a hat trick, sparking Team USA to a 7-0 rout of the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals in Ufa, Russia.

Team USA will face Canada in the semifinals at 4 a.m. Thursday. The game will be televised by NHL Network. It will be the second meeting between the two teams. Canada pulled out a 2-1 preliminary-round win Sunday.

The victory over the Czech Republic guarantees that Team USA will be playing in Saturday's medal round.

Five of Team USA's goals came on the power play, including three in the second period, when it scored five goals overall in the period to take a 6-0 lead.

Goalie John Gibson made 31 saves to earn the shutout. Seth Jones and Jacob Troub had four assists each.

Team USA played without Union sophomore defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, who served a one-game suspension for his major slashing penalty in Monday's game against Slovakia. Gostisbehere could be back in the lineup against Canada.

NHL Network will re-air the Team USA-Czech Republic game at 8 tonight.
