Union-Brown pregame report
Good evening from Messa Rink, where Union seeks to complete its first 2-0 weekend since it swept Penn State Nov. 24-25, and its first ECAC Hockey weekend sweep since beating RPI twice to open conference play Nov. 2-3, as it takes on Brown.
The Dutchmen (7-6-4 ECACH, 14-10-5 overall) are coming off an impressive 4-2 win over Yale on Friday. That moved Union into a fourth-place tie with St. Lawrence. Both teams are a point behind RPI and Yale.
Against Yale, the Dutchmen scored twice even-strength, which has been a problem of late, and they also had a power-play goal and a short-handed goal.
Union fired 42 shots on goal, and it will need to do that against Brown. But games against the Bears are never, ever easy.
The Dutchmen won their second straight Cleary Cup last season. However, the only team they didn’t get a point from was Brown. The Bears beat the Dutchmen twice.
Union should have defeated Brown back on Dec. 7. The Dutchmen chased starting goalie Marco DeFilippo by scoring three first-period goals. Anthony Borelli replaced DeFilippo and stopped all 16 shots. Meanwhile, the Bears overcame a 3-1 deficit to earn a 3-3 tie.
There are no changes in the Dutchmen lineup. Here is the Union lineup, starting with the forwards (LW-C-RW):
Daniel Ciampini/Kyle Bodie/Wayne Simpson
Daniel Carr/Josh Jooris/Matt Wilkins
Cole Ikkala/David Roy/Sam Coatta
Matt Hatch/Max Novak/Kevin Sullivan
The defensive pairings are:
Mat Bodie/Charlie Vasaturo
Greg Coburn/Shayne Gostisbehere
Ryan Forgaard/Sebastien Gingras
Troy Grosenick starts in goal.
The Bears (5-7-5, 9-10-5) are coming off Friday’s 5-1 loss to RPI. Borelli allowed five goals on 33 shots before being pulled.
Sophomore forward Matt Lorito leads the Bears in scoring with 14 goals and 12 assists.
Here is the Brown lineup, starting with the forwards:
Garnet Hathaway/Mrk Baclerio/Jeff Ryan
Massimo Lamacchia/Matt Lorito/Nick Lappin
Matt Harlow/Marc Senecal/Joe Prescott
Mike Juola/Mark Hourihan/Chris Zaires
The defensive pairings are:
Dennis Robertson/Brandon Pfeil
Richie Crowley/Joey de Concilys
Matt Wahl/Jake Goldberg
Borelli will start in goal.
The referees are Chris Cozzan and Tom Steinel Jr. Leo Boylan and Dan Taggart are the linesmen.
