Union takes 2-1 lead over Yale after two

Second-period goals by Max Novak and Matt Hatch have given Union a 2-1 lead over No. 10 Yale after 40 minutes of play in their ECAC Hockey game Friday at Messa Rink.

Both goals were bad ones allowed by Yale goalie Nick Maricic.

With the Dutchmen short-handed, Novak skated hard down the left wing and threw a backhander to the net. The puck hit Maricic's left pad, rolled between his legs an went into the net, tying the score, 1-1, with 11:35 left.

Hatch's goal was even worse. He was behind the goal line when he sent the puck to the net. It hit Maricic's left skate and trickled into the net with four minutes left to give the Dutchmen the lead. It was Union's first even-strength goal in 102:33.

Connor Wilson replaced Maricic with 2:27 left in the second.

Tommy Fallen scored power-play goal late in the first period for Yale.

Union will have 47 seconds of a two-man advantage to start the third period.
