Niskayuna, Clifton Park open Babe Ruth World Series play with wins
Niskayuna and Clifton Park got off to good starts in their Babe Ruth World Series games Saturday.
Niskayuna had a wild contest against Guernsey Valley (Ohio) in its 13-year-old series opener in Williston, N.D. Niskayuna had an 8-3 lead after two innings, and then trailed, 11-8, heading into the bottom of the seventh.
But Niskayuna rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 12-11 victory. Ben Funyak's suicide squeeze with the bases loaded and one out scored Matt Toy with the game-winning run.
Liam Davison had two hits and three RBI for Niskayuna. He had a two-run double in the sixth. Davison was named the player of the game.
Niskayuna returns to action Monday against Lawrenceburg (Tenn.) at 9 p.m.
In the 14-year-old Ruth series in Moses Lake, Wash., Ian Anderson allowed one hit in six innings and struck out eight as Clifton Park rolled to a 10-1 victory over Bryant (Ark.).
Anderson was perfect through the first four innings. He was named player of the game.
Kevin Huerter had two hits and four RBI to lead the Clifton Park 10-hit attack.
Clifton Park faces Jasper (Ind.) at 2 p.m. Sunday.
