Yale beats Quinnipiac, 4-0, to win NCAA hockey title

Yale didn't score a goal in the championship round of the ECAC Hockey tournament.

On Saturday night, the Bulldogs won the NCAA title.

Goalie Jeff Malcolm made 36 saves, and Clinton Bourbonais scored with 3.5 seconds left in the second period to snap a scoreless tie, sending Yale to a 4-0 victory over Quinnipiac in the NCAA Frozen Four title game in Pittsburgh.

Charles Orzetti, Andrew Miller and Jesse Root scored in the third period for Yale, which was beaten by Union, 5-0, in the ECACH semifinals, and 3-0 by Quinnipiac in the third-place game.

But the Bulldogs, the 15th seed in the tournament, turned it on with wins over Minnesota and North Dakota in the West Regional, and an overtime victory over UMass-Lowell in Thursday's semifinal.

Quinnipiac, the ECACH regular-season champion, was the No. 1 seed in the NCAAs.

Yale becomes the first ECACH team to win the NCAA title since Harvard in 1989.
