ECAC Hockey Faceoff Selections 2012-13: Week 1

By Ken Schott
Thursday, October 4, 2012

To borrow a line from Emerson, Lake and Palmer, "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends. We're so glad you could attend. Come inside! Come inside!"

It's time for the fourth annual ECAC Hockey Faceoff Selections, formerly called ECAC Hockey Pick ’em Derby.

I have been looking forward to getting back to covering games. There is plenty of excitement, especially with Union. The Dutchmen are coming off their first NCAA Frozen Four appearance at the Division I level.

Meanwhile, over at RPI, the Engineers are looking to carry over the momentum of last season's strong second half, when they made it to the ECAC Hockey tournament quarterfinals.

As for me, I am seeking my first Faceoff Selections title. A fifth-place finish was not acceptable. I worked out during the offseason, and I am in the best prediction shape of my life!

Matthew Ruffini is the defending champion. Here are last year's standings:

Matthew Ruffini — 129-72-39 297 points
Kevin Sokolski — 126-75-39 291 points
RedLiner36 — 126-75-39 291 points
Stephen Salmon — 125-76-39 289 points
Me — 123-79-38 284 points
Alan Kratzke Jr. — 121-80-39 281 points
Still Crazy In Section 17 — 120-81-39 279 points
Andy Weise — 118-83-39 275 points
Union Bob — 117-84-39 273 points
Achilles 3-7-5 — 115-86-39 269 points
From the NIP to the Bank — 115-87-38 268 points
Brian Unger — 113-90-37 263 points
Burgie — 108-94-38 254 points

The season starts Saturday with two games — Union hosting Merrimack and Quinnipiac at Maine. Several other teams are playing exhibition games, but we don't pick those.

If you want to play, e-mail me at schott@dailygazette.com. The deadline is 7 p.m. Saturday.

Here are my picks:
Saturday
Merrimack at No. 5 Union — Union, 4-1.
Quinnipiac at No. 15 Maine — Maine, 3-2.

Tuesday
Niagara at Colgate — Colgate, 2-1.
