Union downs Penn State, 4-1, to complete series sweep

Shayne Gostisbehere's power-play goal early in the third period snapped a 1-1 tie and sparked eighth-ranked Union to a 4-1 non-conference college hockey win over Penn State on Sunday at Messa Rink.

The Dutchmen (8-2-1) complete a two-game sweep of the Nittany Lions (6-5), who are in their first year of NCAA Division I hockey. Union won, 2-0, Saturday.

Neither one was easy.

Union took a 1-0 lead on a Daniel Ciampini goal 7:21 into the first period. The Nittany Lions tied it 50 seconds into the second on a rebound goal by David Glen. Ciampini appeared to scored his second goal late in the second, but referee Alex Dell prematurely blew his whistle to stop play.

Gostisbehere blasted a right-point drive past goalie Matthew Skoff at 3:23 of the third to give Union the lead. Mark Bennett tipped a Ryan Forgaard drive past Skoff at 8:08 to make it 3-1. Daniel Carr added a late empty-net goal.

I heard your interview on the radio broadcast between the 2nd and 3rd periods, which you said, if Union loses to Penn State, they would be the laughing stock of D-1 college hockey. I take issue w/the statement and your breakdown of the game.

Penn State is a good hockey team, especially in their first season at the D-1 level. They have wins against RIT & Air Force, sitting after this weekend at 6-5 or so.

I would hope that your analysis of a Union hockey game would be objective, you are one of the main beat reporters for this team and an important source of information on how the Dutchman are playing. This is the 2012-2013 Team it is not the Frozen Four team of 2011-2012. I think Union is playing pretty well at that this point. They do not have the signature win as they did on the road at this point last year against Michigan. Their offense at this point in the season does not appear to by dynamic and they are not producing right now at regular strength. However, Union is a very good hockey team, they have shown it on the ice and w/their current record. They have far to go, but it is only the start of December.

Thank you.
