Union beats RPI, 4-2; Mat Bodie out of game with injury

Union scored three times in the second period, including two in a 1:20 span late in the frame, to help the Dutchmen to a 4-2 victory over RPI in the ECAC Hockey opener for both teams Friday at Houston Field House.

Of greater concern for the Dutchmen is an injury suffered by defenseman and team captain Mat Bodie on the first shift of the game. He left ice with 18:12 remaining in the first period. He suffered an upper-body injury and won't return.

Shayne Gostisbehere's power-play goal 4:06 into the second period made it 2-0. Nick Bailen got RPI o the board with a power-play goal midway through the period.

Wayne Simpson blocked a Bailen shot at the left point, and the puck caromed into the neutral zone. Simpson won the race for the puck, and put a backhander past goalie Scott Diebold at 17:40.

With a minute left, Diebold turned aside a Greg Coburn shot. But the rebound went past his left side, and Matt Hatch banged it in.

Daniel Ciampini scored 5:39 into the first period, giving Union a 1-0 lead. Ciampini, who didn't play in last weekend's games at American International and Connecticut, tipped a Coburn right-point shot past goalie Diebold.

Jacob Laliberte scored early in the third period for the Engineers.

The two teams meet again Saturday at Messa Rink.
