Union hockey coach Rick Bennett, who has guided the Dutchmen to their first NCAA Frozen Four appearance, has been named a finalist for the American Hockey Coaches Association's Spencer Penrose Award as national coach of the year, it was announced Tuesday.

Bennett, in his first year as head coach after replacing last year's Penrose winner, Nate Leaman, guided the Dutchmen to a second straight ECAC Hockey regular-season title, and their first ECACH tournament championship. Union (26-7-7) won the NCAA East Regional over the weekend by beating Michigan State, 3-1, in the semifinals, and UMass Lowell, 4-2, in the championship game.

Bennett won the Tim Taylor Award as ECACH coach of the year.

The other finalists are Norm Bazin of UMass Lowell, Bob Daniels of Ferris State, Don Lucia of Minnesota, Mel Pearson of Michigan Tech, Ryan Soderquist of Bentley, and Jerry York of Boston College.

The winner will be announced next Friday in Tampa, Fla., sight of the Frozen Four.

Bazin would probably come in second for me, but this is Bennett's to lose.
