Ex-River Rats, Phantoms announcer Newkirk hired by Texas Stars

Owen Newkirk, who was the play-by-play voice of the Albany River Rats and Adirondack Phantoms, has been named to the same position with the Texas Stars, the AHL team announced Friday.

Newkirk, 31, was with the Rats from 2007-09. He moved on to the Phantoms for the 2009-10 season. Newkirk spent the last two seasons as the analyst for the Binghamton Senators.

Newkirk will also serve as the Stars' director of broadcasting and media relations.

Priot to joining the River Rats, Newkirk was the director of broadcasting for the ECHL’s Elmira Jackals for four seasons (2003-07).
