Union's Gostisbehere scores power-play goal in Team USA's win
Union defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere was one of eight goal scorers as Team USA rolled to an 8-0 victory over Germany in its first preliminary-round game of the World Junior Hockey Championships on Thursday in Ufa, Russia.
Team USA was on its fourth power play of the game when Gostisbehere ripped a slap shot past goalie Marvin Cupper, who was screened on the play. The goal, which was Team USA's first power-play goal of the game, made it 5-0.
Team USA led, 3-0, after the first period. Sean Kuraly scored 19 seconds into the game. Jacon Trouba and Alex Galchenyuk 1:24 midway through the period gave Team USA a three-goal lead.
Besides Gostisbehere, Riley Barner and Ryan Hartman scored in the second period.
JT Miller and Seth Jones scored third-period goals for Team USA. Starting goalie John Gibson stopped 19 shots in the first two periods. Jon Gillies replaced Gibson to start the third period and made seven saves.
Galchenyuk, who also had two assists, was named Team USA player of the game.
Team USA faces Russia at 9 a.m. Friday.
