Union's Gostisbehere officially on Team USA roster

After a two-day delay, Union sophomore defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere can relax. He will be representing the United States in the World Junior Hockey Championships.

Gostisbehere was named to the final Team USA roster Tuesday. Team USA begins play in the WJC on Thursday against Germany at 9 a.m. The tournament runs from Wednesday through Jan. 5 and is being played in Ufa, Russia.

"It's definitely a tremendous honor to play for your country," Gostisbehere said in a statement provided by USA Hockey. "The excitement is there. We want to get these days going quicker. Practices have been going well, so we want to get a game in now."

There are 22 players listed. Team USA will add one more defenseman to the roster.

The final roster was supposed to be announced Sunday. However, there was a player with a medical issue that needed to be addressed. The player was never officially identified.

Gostisbehere played in Team USA’s two pre-tournament games in Helsinki, Finland. He scored the game-winning goal in overtime in Thursday’s 3-2 win over Sweden. He didn’t figure in Team USA’s lone goal in a 5-1 loss to Finland on Saturday.

An ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team selection last season, Gostisbehere is tied for fifth on the Dutchmen in scoring with five goals and eight assists. He was a third-round selection of the Philadelphia Flyers in last June’s NHL draft. Gostisbehere played in all 41 of Union’s games last season and had five goals and 17 assists.

Gostisbehere was invited to the U.S. National Team Development Camp last August in Lake Placid. He had an excellent camp, collecting two goals and two assists in four games.

"We're excited that Shayne will have the opportunity to compete on Team USA at the World Junior Championships,” Union coach Rick Bennett said. “Shayne has proven himself as one of the most dynamic players in all of college hockey. We’re happy that he will have a chance to play against some of the top young players in the game, and hopefully, bring home a gold medal."
