Burke, Chu, Smelker invited to USA Hockey National Team winter camp
RPI forward Jordan Smelker, Wisconsin defenseman and Albany native Courtney Burke and Union College assistant coach Julie Chu have been invited by USA Hockey to the U.S. Women's National Team winter camp, which will run Dec. 26-31 in Blaine, Minn.
Thirty-six players have been invited and will be divided into two teams of 18 –- Team Blue and Team White -- for a series of intrasquad scrimmages.
The scrimmages will help determine the players who will represent Team USA in the 2013 Women's World Championship in Ottawa.
Smelker and Chu will play for Team Blue. Smelker, a junior, is RPI's second-leading scorer with seven goals and five assists. Chu, in her third year with Union, played n 129 games fro Harvard from 2002-07. She scored 88 goals and holds the record for assists with 196. Chu is also second in the NCAA history for total points with 284.
Burke, a freshman, will be on Team White. She is tied for third in scoring on the Badgers with three goals and 11 assists. At 18 years, 3 months, Burke is the youngest player in the camp.
