Stephane Boileau and Brian Yanovitch are going to pay for their ill-timed penalties in last Friday's 4-3 overtime loss to RPI.
Dutchmen coach Nate Leaman announced after practice Wednesday at Messa Rink that Boileau and Yanovitch won't play Friday in the team's ECAC Hockey opener against Brown at Messa Rink.
Both players took penalties in the RPI offensive zone. Yanovitch was called for boarding 1:09 into the second period, and Chase Polacek scored on the power play that gave RPI a 2-1 lead.
The Dutchmen had a 3-2 lead when Boileau, who had a goal and an assist in the game, hooked the stick out of RPI defenseman Jeff Foss' hands behind the Engineers net with 4:37 left in the third period. Bryan Brutlag got the power-play goal that tied the score with 2:54 left, setting the stage for Polacek's game-winner 1:58 into OT.
"[The penalties] were unnecessary," Leaman said. "We're hurting ourselves. We did it against Maine in Game 1. Unfortunately, we're still learning that aspect. The bottom line is I'm sitting Yanovitch, and I'm sitting Boileau. They both took penalties that hurt our team. Unfortunately, it's gotten to that point. We just have to make sure that the message gets sent that we can't take penalties like that and expect to win."
Leaman didn't know who would replace Boileau and Yanovitch.
Two players missed practice. Forward Mario Valery-Trabucco was ill — Leaman wasn't sure if it was the flu — and goalie Keith Kinkaid has a sinus infection.
