Two incredible games. Two amazing finishes. You can't have any better ECAC Hockey tournament semifinals than what I witnessed Friday at the Times Union Center.
A pair of 4-3 decisions in which the winning teams rally late to win it.
Top-seeded Yale got goals from Mark Arcobello and Matt Nelson 22 seconds apart late in the third period to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 victory in the first semifinal.
Cornell's comeback win was just as exciting. Down, 3-1, to defending tournament champion Princeton, the second-seeded Big Red get two late goals to tie it, and Colin Greening scored the game-winner 9:56 into the second overtime for a 4-3 triumph.
Evan Barlow's amazing end-to-end rush ignited the comeback. With the teams skating 4-on-4, Barlow headed down the right wing. No one touched him. When Barlow got to Princeton's right circle, he cut to his left. He got goalie Zane Kalemba to commit early, and Barlow fired the puck into the open net with 2:54 left.
With Cornell goalie Ben Scrivens pulled for an extra attacker, Riley Nash tied it off of a scramble with 24.5 seconds remaining.
The Big Red carried that momentum into the first overtime, but couldn't score. The shots on goal for the period were 10-10, but it seemed like the Big Red had more than that.
The winning goal started with a partially fanned shot by Jared Seminoff at the right point. The puck had enough momentum to get to Tyler Mugford in the right circle. He slid it over to Greening, who fired a perfect wrist shot over Kalemba's right shoulder.
So, we have the top two seeds battling for the title. It should be a great game.
The predictions
Championship game — Yale 4, Cornell 3
Consolation game — St. Lawrence 4, Princeton 3
That's all from the TU Center. I'll see you tomorrow.
Good Night! Good Hockey!
