Hanna forces TV schedule changes
Saturday, September 6, 2008

The remnants of Tropical Storm Hanna have made a mess of a number of sports events this weekend.

The fun started Friday when NASCAR postponed Friday’s Nationwide Series Emerson 250 and Saturday’s Sprint Cup Chevy Rock & Roll 400 races to Sunday.

More postponements took place Saturday. The U.S. Open tennis tournament got in one men’s semifinal match, but saw the second semifinal stopped in the third set and the women’s final postponed. And the Phillies-Mets game was postponed and moved to Sunday, forcing the teams to play a day-night double-header.

That has forced some scrambling for the networks. Here are the changes that have been made, starting with the U.S. Open.

CBS (WRGB Ch. 6) will show the completion of the men’s semifinal, between Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, at 4 p.m. Sunday. The women’s final, between Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic, will be on CBS at 9 p.m. The men’s final will be televised by CBS at 5 p.m. Monday.

The first game of the Mets-Phillies double-header will be televised by SNY at 2:15 p.m., with ESPN showing the second game at 8 p.m. Johnstown radio station WIZR-AM (930) will have both games. Albany’s WTRY-FM (98.3) will air just the second game. WOFX-AM (980), which normally airs the Mets, will have the Jets-Dolphins game on at 1 p.m.

The original plan was to have WGY-AM (810) air the Phillies-Mets game on Sunday, but that was changed when the game was moved from a day game to night. The decision was made to move that game to WTRY.

And, as I mentioned in a blog Friday, ESPN will have the Sprint Cup race at 1 p.m Sunday (it was originally supposed to be on ABC), and ESPN2 will carry the Nationwide race at 7 p.m.
