Ben Barr, whose two short-handed goals in Game 2 of the 2003 ECAC Hockey tournament first-round series helped 11th-seeded RPI eliminate sixth-seeded Union, could jbe oining the Dutchmen as an assistant coach.
Union coach Nate Leaman wouldn’t confirm a U.S. Hockey Report late Saturday that Barr join the Dutchmen as an assistant coach, replacing Bill Riga.
“[Barr] is someone that I've been interested in,” Leaman said in a telephone interview from Vermont, where he was watching a tournament.
Leaman said he can’t officially offer the position until Tuesday.
Barr was a volunteer assistant coach at RPI for nearly two years. During the spring, he was hired by Albany Academy to be the director of player development at the school.
Riga left Union nearly two weeks ago to become an assistant coach at ECACH-rival Quinnipiac.
