Remembering George Morrison
Thursday, November 13, 2008

What will I remember most about George Morrison, the Union women’s volunteer assistant coach who died Wednesday at the age 59 from a brain tumor?

Will it be his smile? Will it be his positive attitude? Will it be asking how my son is doing?

Nah. It’s the Krispy Kreme donuts.

Earlier this decade, Morrison was a volunteer assistant coach for the RPI men’s team. When I would go over to Houston Field House every Wednesday to speak to then-head coach Dan Fridgen, there would be a box of Krispy Kreme donuts. He would always tell me to have one or two. And, man, those donuts were tasty. And on those nights I covered an RPI game, I would drive over to Krispy Kreme store in Latham and get a dozen donuts to take home.

Maybe it’s just a coincidence, but when Morrison left RPI and there weren’t any Krispy Kreme donuts to eat, I think that is when the Krispy Kreme franchise began to struggle. The Latham store closed down.

It was great to see Morrison again last winter, when he came aboard as a volunteer assistant for the Dutchwomen. He cared a lot about the program, and wanted to see it succeed.

Morrison developed the brain tumor just before the start of the season. Unfortunately, it was inoperable. When I heard about it, I was devastated.

I hope when Morrison gets up to heaven, God has a supply of Krispy Kreme donuts waiting for him.
