Former Union hockey great Gill Egan will be one of six former Dutchmen athletes to be inducted into the Union athletics hall of fame on Saturday.
Egan becomes the third hockey player to be honored, joining goalies Steve Baker and Wayne McDougall. Egan and McDougall were teammates for two seasons, probably the two best in school history, when they reached the NCAA Division III tournament Frozen Four in 1984 and 1985. The Dutchmen reached the championship game in 1984, losing to Babson a night after beating RIT in a four-overtime game. Egan, despite playing with the flu, scored the game-winner.
Egan remains the school's all-time leading goal scorer with 83, 23 years after he graduated. He is third all-time in scoring with 147 points.
I spoke with Egan on Wednesday, and he is honored and humbled by the honor.
"For me, it just says that I played on some really good hockey teams with some really good players, and I'm receiving something just on the backs of their labor and efforts," Egan said. "I was just one cog in the wheel."
There will be more about Egan in Friday’s Daily Gazette and here on the Web site. To view a video of current Union coach Nate Leaman talking about Egan, click here.
