Is this how it's going to be all day?
Western Kentucky's Ty Rogers just hit the shot of the entire tournament, an ungodly bomb from the right wing to beat fifth-seeded Drake at the buzzer in overtime, 101-99.
I watched it from one of the far tunnels, and my ears are still ringing.
When the game went into overtime, the Drake Bulldogs mascot, Spike, gave me a weary pat on the back as he walked through the tunnel toward the bathroom to take off his head, which is the size of a large beanbag chair and about as comfortable to wear.
He skipped back out, refreshed, with three minutes left in overtime.
After Rogers' shot, Drake's Jonathon Cox stayed on the floor on his back for about half a minute with his arms over his face. Can you imagine what that must be like, with a CBS cameraman holding the lens two feet from your face?

  • The merchandise hawkers at the arena are selling commemorative t-shirts for all eight teams. As of early afternoon, Drake was the first to sell out, and as of mid-afternoon Drake's team was the first to bow out in the biggest upset of the tournament so far.
Siena, the second smallest school in the tournament, was next to sell out of t-shirts, probably due to the fact that hundreds of Saints fans showed up for the open house and practice on Thursday.
  • I'm sure I'm not the first person to make this observation, but the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers' mascot looks like a red Grimace.
  • The Connecticut Huskies watched the WVU-Drake game courtside with their iPod headphones on right next to the Drake band, which wasn't quite loud enough to drown out some San Diego fans heckling them from the other side.
All but one of the players ignored them, but one turned and grinned at the Toreros chant of "Over-rated."
  • I could have sworn I saw Jeff Wilkin in the Drake rooting section, but it was a student with his shaved head and face completely covered in bright blue facepaint. Then I saw another, and another.
Jeff Wilkin cloned, a scary thought.

The world could use another 50 Jeff Wilkins ... with or without the blue faces ... so the clone idea is a pleasant thought
