Siena-Niagara running
Monday, March 9, 2009

The only issue now is whether Kenny Hasbrouck will be affected by his right calf injury. He looks fine in warmups, and I haven't seen him miss too many shots, but this is relaxed warmup pace. He has his calf pretty much mummified wth a white wrap and tape.

The team just left the court with 10 minutes to tip, and Hasbrouck was the last one off the floor. He missed a three at the far end, trotted toward the tunnel with a grin and took a pass from Siena president Fr. Kevin Mullen. He drained it, to much rejoicing from the Siena student section, and just kept going to the tunnel.

UPDATE 1
Niagara has hit three three-pointers, including a banker by Tyrone Lewis reminiscent of his big shot against Rider at the other end of the floor on Sunday that sent the game into overtime.

Hasbrouck has taken two shots, missing a three and drive.

UPDATE 2
Hasbrouck looked pretty explosive on a drive, then Alex Franklin made a tough little turnaround over the much taller Benson Egemonye to get with 15-9.
Siena is shooting just 26.7 percent from the field (4-for-15).

UPDATE 3
It just got really loud in here.
Clarence Jackson came off the bench and came up with a bunch of steals and hit two three-pointers, the second of which gave Siena a 23-19 lead.
Siena scored 10 straight points on a Franklin free throw, a deep three by Jackson, a layup and free throw by Edwin Ubiles set up by a Jackson steal, and Jackson's second three.
Egemonye scored inside to cut it to 23-21.

UPDATE 4
Siena got the lead as high as 27-21, but Egemonye bamked in a shot, and Rob Garrison opportunistically picked up a loose rebound that Josh Duell couldn't catch up to and went in for an uncontested layup to cut it to 27-25.

HALFTIME
Niagara appears to be content to chuck up three-pointers and chasing down the wild rebounds, but Demetrius Williamson came off the bench and made two during an 8-2 run that tied the game at 33-33 with 22.4 seconds left.
Siena called timeout, and as Hasbrouck dribbled looking for an opening, he almost lost it, tacked it down and threw up a three that bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

UPDATE 5
Siena's getting a little bit of a running game going, but Niagara is starting to get drives into the paint.
Hasbrouck just made a tough bank in transition, gathering in a pass from Ronald Moore that was behind him and still squaring up his shot all in one motion.
Anthony Nelson's drive got Niagara back to 41-39.
Bilal Benn has 10 rebounds for Niagara, six on the offensive end.

UPDATE 6
They just announced the attendance, 9,744, which pushes the tournament total to 50,820, a MAAC record by over 700.
Franklin picked up his third foul with 14:57 left and came out, but he's back in now.
Hasbrouck hit a three to make it 44-41.
Egemonye and company continue to kill Siena on the offensive glass.
Rob Garrison's layup cut it to 46-45.

UPDATE 7
Demetrius Williamson hit another three to tie it at 48-48.
Siena had a chance to improve on a 50-48 lead, but Clarence Jackson threw a lazy pass to Edwin Ubiles, and Tyrone Lewis picked it off easily for a breakaway slam.

UPDATE 8
Ryan Rossiter just sent the crowd into a frenzy. He sprinted to the sideline to chase a crazy carom off a missed Siena shot, dove and barely slapped it back to Ronald Moore, taking out two charis as he went flying out of bounds.
Moore passed to Hasbrouck for a runner that made it 54-40.

UPDATE 9
Now it's Hasbrouck's turn to get the crowd going. He made a three, then a steal that led to a putback in transition by Rossiter to give the Saints the biggest lead by either team in the game.

UPDATE 10
Hasbrouck and Rossiter are taking over.
Hasbrouck made a drive and pullup on the left baseline to give the Saints a 65-54 lead.
Then Hasbrouck made a steal that led to a pullup by Edwin Ubiles.
Franklin just sent the crowd into a roar by dunking an offensive rebound of a miss by Rossiter, who had gathered in an offensive rebound, to make it 71-59.

UPDATE 11
Siena had a chance to increase a 12-point lead, but Ronald Moore was called for a five-second violation.
That led to a pullup by Rob Garrison.
Anthony Nelson hit two free throws with 1:36 left to cut it to 72-63.
