Talk about crazy eights. Six different players scored eight points for Siena against Boise State in their season opener on Monday.
Kenny Hasbrouck was his usual magnificent self, with 20 points in 24 minutes, point guard Ronald Moore did his thing, with six assists and no turnovers and Ryan Rossiter had a nice stat line, with eight points, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Edwin Ubiles and Alex Franklin were relatively quiet, but that was the point. Everyone got in the act, even the bench.
The two freshmen, Owen Wignot and Kyle Downey, were comfortable out there, and there was no dropoff in the shark-attack defense.
At one pont in the second half, head coach Fran McCaffery had this lineup on the floor: sophomore Clarence Jackson, the two freshmen, and big men Eric Harris and Steven Priestley.
It was everything the Saints wanted, and McCaffery said he wasn't surprised that Siena came out like that in their season opener. They've been getting a lot of ink on a national level in the last few months, and you could tell everyone was glad to finally get on the floor and get this thing started.
One line that we heard a lot last year that you can't say this year is "it's easy to forget that this is a young team." Siena isn't young anymore, and it showed. As Boise State head coach Greg Graham said, "They have four guys who averaged over 30 minutes last year who are all back; we had four guys who averaged over 30 minutes who are all gone."
By the way, apologies to Steve Priestley for neglecting to mention him in a story I wrote for Sunday's paper about sophomores Jackson and Rossiter. Of course, he's in the sophomore class, too, and has an important role, even if he doesn't get a lot of minutes. He had a nice line against Boise: four rebounds, a block and a steal in 10 minutes.
