Motorists heading south on the Northway past Exit 8 at about 8 a.m. on Tuesday were treated to a large banner asking, “Afghanistan War Endless?”
You can see the photo by clicking HERE.
Brought to you courtesy of “Peace Works,” a local group of peace activists, the banner was an old white sheet, hand painted. The idea was to provoke people into thinking about the reality of the recently escalated Afghan War. (In obedience to the 11th commandment -- “Thou shalt provoke.”)
The activists hung the banner on the overpass at the exit, behind the chain link fence for safety. Several motorists gave approving honks and waved. (If you know your honk-ology, you know the difference between a friendly honk and one that is hostile.)
The activists left the banner and went to get some breakfast, returning about an hour later only to find the banner gone. It is not known whether it was the local constabulary or someone who disagreed with the message (not unlike the unknown person or persons who have stolen peace signs and banners off of the lawns and porches of citizens who display them) who took it down.
The activists noted a sign alongside of the overpass advertising a pancake breakfast remained in place. Several members of the group also remembered an American flag displayed at one of the overpasses that remained in place, untouched for close to a year.
Watch for more banner drops in the Capital Region.
