I've written two blogs on the book, “JFK and the Unspeakable” by James Douglass, Ph.D, the noted and well-respected theologian and researcher.
I got some interesting comments on the second blog, one being from “PlanetAlbany”:
“If you are going to make wild charges about the murder of a U.S. president, you might attempt to put some actual supporting evidence in the post itself. On second thoughts, don't bother, or The Gazette blogs could become ground for Holocaust denial and other crazy 'debates.' ”
One the one hand s/he tells me to give some “actual supporting evidence” and immediately says “don't bother." There's just no pleasing some people.
Like the Holocaust, for which there is abundant evidence that it did in fact happen, there is equally abundant evidence that points to a conspiracy in the murder of President Kennedy.
“newgrant18” astutely commented: “From most events in history, we need to learn our lessons & move on.”
I am thrilled and delighted to announce that on Friday, June 19 at 7 p.m. James Douglass will speak on what the lesson is for us and how we can move on, at the Hubbard Interfaith Center at the College of Saint Rose on Madison Avenue in Albany. There is a $15 free will donation but no one will be turned away for an inability to pay. (I'm the organizer so I can promise that.)
I was so impressed with the book that I called Mr. Douglass and arranged for him to speak here in Albany and worked with a couple of other groups to arrange for some other engagements on the east coast.
The major point of Douglass' book is why Kennedy died and why it matters. He unmasks the forces of the “unspeakable” so that we as a country can pursue our vision of peace. Against the background of Thomas Merton's “Cold War Letters”, Douglass put the murder in the context of our country's military-industrial complex (which Eisenhower so eloquently warned us about in his farewell address to the country.)
In speaking with Douglass about arranging his lecture, he told me that he is very concerned that President Obama is being set up the same way Kennedy was and we need to get conscious of our history so that we avoid the same travesty and tragedy 46 years later.
The book will be available for purchase at the event and all proceeds will go to benefit the Albany Catholic Worker Emaus House.
I hope I get to meet lots of fellow peacemakers on June 19. If Douglass is right (and I think he is) we have a great deal of work to do together.
