LOUISVILLE, KY -- Mine That Bird squeezed through a narrow opening along the rail and splashed home to a 6 3/4-length victory in today's 135th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
Sent off at 50.60-1 by a crowd of 153,563, Mine That Bird returned $103.20 for a $2 win bet, the second-largest payout in race history behind Donerail ($184.90) in 1913.
Giacomo ($102.60) in 2005 is the only other Derby winner to pay in triple figures.
Ridden by Calvin Borel, who won the 2007 Derby aboard Street Sense in nearly identical fashion, Mine That Bird ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.66.
Pioneerof the Nile, third in the wagering at 6-1, won a photo for second by a nose over Musket Man. Papa Clem was another head back in fourth.
Friesan Fire, the 7-2 favorite, was cut and bleeding from his left front leg in a traffic jam coming out of the starting gate and ran next-to-last in the 19-horse field. I Want Revenge, the 3-1 program favorite, was scratched this morning with a swollen left front ankle.
