SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Preakness-winning filly Rachel Alexandra has safely arrived at Monmouth Park, where she will run in the $1 million Haskell Invitational on Sunday.
Trainer Steve Asmussen said this morning that the trip went perfect.
"She left around 4 and got in at 8:15," Asmussen said. "Everything's good."
Rachel Alexandra is going after her eighth straight victory in the 1 1/8-mile Haskell, where she will face males for the second time. The first was in the Preakness, where she became the first filly in 85 years to win the second leg of the Triple Crown.
The plan called for Rachel Alexandra to school in the paddock during today's sixth race at Monmouth, and jog on the main track Saturday morning.
Where she runs after the Haskell remains undecided, but she will return to Asmussen's barn here at the Oklahoma training track either Sunday night or early Monday morning.
The $1 million Travers, the centerpiece of the Saratoga Race Course summer, is among the possibilities. Co-owner Jess Jackson is a fan of racing's history, so try this on for size:
First run in 1864, the Travers predates all three Triple Crown races and is the oldest stakes race for 3-year-olds in the U.S. Only seven fillies have won it; three of them in the first five years. The last filly winner was Lady Rotha in 1915, but she finished second and was moved up with the disqualification to last of Trial By Jury. The last filly to actually cross the wire first in the Travers was Ada Nay in 1903.
