Brown gets first Spa winner
Friday, July 31, 2009

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Kid Kate, a 2-year-old Lemon Drop Kid filly, sprinted clear to win today's fourth race and give trainer Chad Brown, a Mechanicville native, his first victory of the meet.

It was Brown's first starter this summer. Last year, he opened the meet with a victory in the first race.

"I didn't have the right races go the first couple days, but I have plenty ready to run now," Brown said.

The fourth race was originally carded for 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass, but was switched to the same distance on a sloppy main track. Kid Kate ($11.20) hit the wire in 1:05.26.

"She's really bred for it and she's a tiny little horse; I figured she'd get over it pretty well," Brown said. "I was going to run her either way. She's been training good."

Also in the fourth, Caminadora, a 2-year-old More Than Ready filly, finished third for Starlight Partners, headed by Schenectady native Don Lucarelli and Saratoga Springs resident Jack Wolf.

Brown is saddling the entry of Catch the Bottom and Loveofthegame in the fifth race, a six-furlong maiden claimer. He also I.M. Boomer entered in the finale, another off-the-turfer. Boomer was entered for main track only.

"It's my home turf, so I'm going to come out swinging when I run horses, I can tell you that," Brown said.
