The Carolina Hurricanes have signed forward Mike Angelidis and defenseman Zack Fitzgerald to one-year, two-way contracts for the upcoming season.
Angelidis 24, was an alternate captain for the Albany River Rats in 2008-09, scoring 25 points (15g, 10a) and leading the team with 142 penalty minutes in 67 games. A shoulder injury on March 20 ended his season early.
Signed as an unrestricted free agent in July 2006, Angelidis (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) has spent the last three seasons with the Rats, compiling 61 points (30g, 31a) and 337 PIM in 183 games.
Fitzgerald (6-1, 214), 24, played all of last season with the Calder Cup finalist Manitoba Moose, leading the team with 209 PIM to go along with eight points (0g, 8a) and a plus-13 rating in 56 games. He has 20 points (6g, 14a) and 500 PIM in 147 AHL games for Manitoba and Peoria.
“Mike and Zack each bring tough, gritty play to the Hurricanes organization,” Canes assistant GM Jason Karmanos said in a statement. “Mike has been a key member of our AHL team in the past three years, and Zach is a stay-at-home defenseman that adds necessary depth to our defense.”
Angelidis will earn $500,000 at the NHL level and $55,000 in the AHL, with $55,000 guaranteed. Fitzgerald's deal is worth $500,000 in the NHL and $60,000 in the AHL, with $65,000 guaranteed.
