Phantoms get familiar face
Defenseman Joey Mormina, a Colgate graduate who played the 2007-08 season for the Albany River Rats, signed a one-year free agent deal with the Philadelphia Flyers.
It is likely that Mormina, who spent last season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, will help anchor the Glens Falls-based Adirondack Phantoms blue line.
Standing 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds, Mormina had 11 points (2g, 9a) in 70 games for Wilkes-Barre in 2008-09, ranking among the AHL leaders with a plus-37 rating. Mormina played one year for Albany, with 13 points (4g, 9a) in 77 games.
Mormina has played four full AHL seasons for Manchester, Albany and WBS, with 48 points (8g, 40a) in 270 games.
He was originally a Flyers draft pick, taken in the sixth round, 193rd overall, in 2002, following his freshman season at Colgate.

It will be nice to see him local - or at least more often than we did with Wilkes-Barre. I always liked Mormina. I think he's an excellent defenceman. I still don't understand why the Canes let him get away.
