Carolina keeps two in the fold
Thursday, July 9, 2009

The Carolina Hurricanes signed goaltender Justin Peters and defenseman Casey Borer to one-year, two-way contracts for the 2009-10 season.

Peters, 22, established himself as a No. 1 goalie last season, going 19-30-4, 2.89 and .908 in 56 games for the Albany River Rats, and is considered one of the organization's top overall prospects.

Borer, 23, is similarly well-regarded. His third pro season ended with a broken vertebrae in his neck from the Rats team bus crash of Feb. 19, though he was back on skates after practice before the regular season ended in mid-April.

“The upcoming season is important for both Casey and Justin,” Canes assistant GM Jason Karmanos said in a statement. “Justin made big strides last year in Albany, and now it is time for him to take his game to the next level and show that he can be an NHL goaltender.

“Casey is coming off of a second consecutive season-ending injury, so it will be important for him to re-establish his defensive game so that he can once again play at the NHL level.”

Both Peters and Borer will earn $500,000 in the NHL and $60,000 at the AHL level, with $65,000 guaranteed.
