The Carolina Hurricanes are hosting their annual Red-White scrimmage in about five hours, here at the RBC Center. Outside in the parking lot is another Canes tradition, the Caniac Carnival.
It is the ninth straight year for the preseason party that formally kicks off hockey season here in the Triangle. It runs from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and free tickets are handed out for the 3 p.m. scrimmage, which typically draws a few thousand folks.
On the ice from 10 to 11:30 is the non-game group, a collection of Canes regulars skating with head coach Peter Laviolette and assistants Kevin McCarthy and Tom Barrasso: Sergei Samsonov, Eric Staal, Ray Whitney, Tuomo Ruutu, Matt Cullen, Scott Walker, Chad LaRose, Joni Pitkanen, Tim Gleason, Niklas Wallin, Joe Corvo, Josef Melichar, Tomas Kaberle, Cam Ward and Mike Leighton.

No Bobby Hughes? Is he actually AT camp?
9:30 p.m. [ Suggest removal ]
Bobby Hughes is at camp, but has not been given medical clearance to get back on the ice. He's working out with the team, but there's no telling when he'll get the OK. He told me that it was a matter of "signing some papers." Fact is, he was unable to do much of anything over the summer and is nowhere near being in the kind of shape he has to be to play. It will be a while.
