One and done

There will be 40 preseason AHL games played between Sept. 22 and Oct. 7, but only one of them involves the River Rats.

According to the AHL schedule, the Rats will host East Division rival Bridgeport at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at the former Knickerbocker Arena on South Pearl Street.

Albany's parent team, the Carolina Hurricanes, won't play an NHL preseason game here, but the Canes do have one against the Flyers at the Spectrum, soon-to-be-closed home of the AHL Phantoms, on Sept. 24.

The AHL will open its 73rd season on Oct. 8. Albany opens its season at home on Oct. 13, also vs. Bridgeport.

Speaking of the Rats, congratulations go out to assistant coach Geordie Kinnear. Champ and his wife, Lorraine, welcomed their third child, a son, Cade, on July 25th.
