Maram, trained by 29-year-old Mechanicville native Chad Brown beat Irish import Heart Shaped in a photo finish to win the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf today at Santa Anita Park.
Brown dedicated the win to his grandfather, Elmer Maynard, who passed away this week at the age of 84.
"My grandfather wanted me to be here if he passed," Brown said in the winner's circle after the race. "When that happened, I knew I was going to win."
Not counting the inaugural 1984 Breeders' Cup, Brown became the 23rd trainer to win with his first Breeders' Cup starter. As an assitant to Hall of Famer Bobby Frankel, Brown saddled Ginger Punch to victory in last year's Breeders' Cup Distaff at Monmouth Park when Frankel stayed behind in California to be with his ailing dog, Happy.
Sent off at 11-1, Maram paid $24.20, $13.20 and $6.40 for a $2 bet.
