Prado gets Classic mount; Bustin Stones retired
Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Newly inducted Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado has picked up the mount on Travers winner Colonel John for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic.

Trainer Eoin Harty needed to replace jockey Garrett Gomez, who had already committed to ride Go Between for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott in the Classic. Colonel John hasn't had a race since the Travers, but breezed six furlongs in 1:11.40 on Tuesday at Santa Anita, where the Breeders' Cup will be held Oct. 24 and 25.

Harty, who also has Classic contender Well Armed, said Colonel John will have one more work before the race.

One horse who won't make it to the Breeders' Cup is Bustin Stones, the undefeated New York-bred sprinter bred and owned by Troy native Roddy Valente. A problematic right front foot, which cost him a start in the Grade 2 A.G. Vanderbilt at Saratoga Race Course this summer, is to blame.

Bustin Stones has already been sent to Dr. Jerry Bilinski's Waldorf Farm in North Chatham, where the son of City Zip will stand at stud for a $6,500 fee. Valente is syndicating shares in Bustin Stones for $20,000.

Valente and trainer Bruce Levine had hoped to get Bustin Stones to the BC Sprint. He won the Grade 1 Carter Handicap April 5 in what would be his final start, and also won the Grade 2 General George Handicap at Laurel Park. He retires with a perfect 6-0 mark and $480,150 in earnings.
