Goalies Justin Peters and Daniel Manzato were reassigned to Albany by the parent Carolina Hurricanes today. Their arrival signals the imminent departure of David Leggio, on a two-way AHL-ECHL contract, and Ryan Munce, who is in Rats camp as a free agent.
Both goalies saw action in one NHL preseason game. Peters stopped 19 of 21 shots (.895) in 30 minutes of work (4.00), while Manzato allowed four goals on 18 shots (.714) in 28 minutes (8.57) and was saddled with one of the Canes' three losses.
It's a toss-up which goalie will get the No. 1 job in Albany, and could be that way until one of them emerges and plays into that role. Peters would seem to have an experience edge, with a full AHL season already under his belt. One of them will need to take charge quickly; the Rats can't afford to give up an entire month or more to start the season and then be forced to play catch-up for a playoff spot until April.
Carolina is left with 30 players on the training camp roster. Any or all of defenseman Bryan Rodney and forwards Trevor Gillies, Joe Jensen, Dwight Helminen, Dan LaCouture, each scheduled to play tonight's preseason game at Nashville, could wind up in Albany. Of the seven players on the Canes' injured list (Niclas Wallin, Rod Brind'Amour, Justin Williams, Tim Conboy, Ray Whitney, Tuomo Ruuto, Zach Boychuk), only Conboy -- on a two-way contract this season and one-way the next -- could see any time with the Rats and even that figures to be minimal. He is day-to-day with a torso injury, but skated in practice today.
Albany has a preseason game Sunday night at 7:30 at the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg, Mass. (about 30 minutes north of Worcester) vs Portland, new affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres. According to Google's directions, the rink is approximately 159 miles or 2 hours, 44 minutes from Albany's former Knickerbocker Arena.
Here's an interesting leftover from Wednesday's preseason game vs. Bridgeport. Over the past two years, former Rats star Keith Aucoin and ex-Sound Tiger defenseman Drew Fata cultivated an intense dislike for each other, which spilled out to the fans. One Rats regular wore an Islanders sweater with Fata's No. 44 on the back, above which -- instead of his name -- the nameplate read "Fata Sucks." Very creative. Aucoin went to Washington and Fata to Phoenix this summer, but the bitterness remains. Fata's non-fan was back at the game on Wednesday, with a small alteration on his jersey, where one word was written in marker between the original two. It now reads, "Fata Still Sucks." Too bad the Rats don't play San Antonio.
