Jockey John Velazquez is on a roll, winning his third straight race, this one for trainer Todd Pletcher in the Grade III $150,000-added La Troienne for 3-year-old fillies.
Aboard 9-5 favorite Game Face, Velazquez, on the rail, outfinished Keep the Peace and Edgar Prado to her outside to win the race by a head. Four hours from now, Velazquez will hope to have a similar, maybe less dramatic, finish with the Cowboy.
Velazquez has now swept the first two of five graded stakes on the Derby undercard. He also won the Grade II $282,000 Churchill Downs on Elite Squadron for trainer James Baker in the fifth.
Next up is the Grade III Churchill Distaff Turf Mile. Velazquez will be aboard the Pletcher-trained Danzon from post three. With 41 minutes to post, Danzon is 8-1 in the wagering.
